Chapter Fifteen

Emma came to slowly. A smile touched her lips as she remembered the night before. As she moved she realized she might be sore in some interesting places today, but oh, had it been worth it! She tingled all over as she remember the feel of his hands, and his mouth, caressing her, touching her in ways she’d never known. She reached out, hoping to start this day with some more of him, of the way he made her feel. Her hand touched cold sheets. She opened her eyes and stared at the empty pillow beside her. Feeling disappointed, she got up. She visited the bathroom and brushed her teeth. Looking in the mirror she noticed a little patch of razor burn on her chest. She touched it gently, loving the thought that he had marked her as his own. She put on her robe.

“Now, don’t get carried away. It’s that kind of thinking that gets you in trouble. You are not his own and he is not yours. He is just an incredibly sexy man, who you spent a wonderful night with, she smiled, and hopefully will spend many more with this summer.”

She went downstairs and was disappointed not to smell coffee brewing. She’d thought he must be doing the same as he had in the cabin. He wasn’t in the kitchen at all. She peeked outside, thinking he may be on the deck. No, no sign of him there. She went out and looked down the beach; perhaps he was walking down there. She didn’t see him. Looking up the driveway she noticed that Gramps’ truck was gone. Well! She went back inside, her heart racing. He hadn’t stuck around for the morning after even when he was practically living on her driveway?! She took a deep breath. Calm down, there will be a perfectly reasonable explanation.

She busied herself making coffee, though her hands trembled as she did. It was only six thirty, there was plenty of time before she had to leave. She would shower and get ready, and by the time she’d made breakfast he’d back from wherever he’d gone. It would be fine. She strained to listen for the truck as she showered and dressed. She checked herself in the mirror, satisfied with the blouse and pencil skirt that were more suitable for her city lunch than the cutoff jeans she preferred to wear up here. She wondered if her appearance gave away the fact that she’d spent the night making passionate love to a gorgeous man. Her eyes shone, maybe her complexion glowed a little, but she wasn’t wearing a sign that said ‘Screwed Last Night’ - or ‘Dumped This Morning’,

“Make breakfast,” she said out loud. “Act like everything is OK and it will be OK.”

She scrambled eggs, fried bacon and sausage, even popped some biscuits in the oven that she had in the freezer from the weekend. When everything was ready she served up two plates and covered them over. Where was he? No note.
